How to Measure Your Foot Length

Measure your actual foot rather than relying on the centimeter number printed on a shoe label. Measure later in the day if possible, when feet may be slightly larger.

1Stand on paper

Place a sheet of paper on a hard, flat surface and stand with your weight evenly balanced.

2Mark heel and toe

Mark the outermost point of your heel and the tip of your longest toe.

3Measure both feet

Measure the distance between the marks in a straight line and repeat with the other foot.

4Use the longer foot

Enter the longer measurement. If you fall between two sizes, starting with the larger size is usually safer.

Why Shoe Size Conversions Are Approximate

Shoe sizing is not identical across every brand. Two shoes carrying the same EU or US size can fit differently because of the last, width, toe shape, material and intended use. The centimeter value printed on a shoe box may also describe a brand-specific size rather than the measured length of your foot.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I measure both feet?

Yes. Feet commonly differ slightly in length. Use the measurement from the longer foot when choosing a size.

What should I do if my foot length falls between sizes?

Start with the next available size for more room. The ideal choice may still depend on shoe width, shape and how closely you prefer the shoe to fit.

Is the CM number on a shoe label the same as foot length?

Not always. Some brands use their own centimeter or JP sizing value, which may differ from actual measured foot length. Use the measurement instructions and the brand’s own chart when possible.

Why do men’s and women’s US shoe sizes differ?

US men’s and women’s systems use different numbering even when the physical shoe length is similar. UK and EU sizing also follow different scales.

Do EU shoe sizes differ for men and women?

EU shoe numbers are generally not gender-specific, but the shape and width of men’s and women’s shoes can still differ.
